![]() (click picture to enlarge) Beslnickel, Pelznichol, Belsniggle...this German 'giver of gifts' was known by many different names. The word Belsnickel originated from a German term "Pelz Nichol" translated means "Nicholas dressed in fur". These stoic figures have hunched backs, large face with prominent long beards, their hands are often drawn into their sleeves and held closely to their bodies as if they are trying to stay warm. These wonderful figures reflected the 19th century version of Santa Claus. In the early 1930's, Thomas Nast's jolly rotund man changed the image of Santa Claus forever....thus....the mysterious, old world Belsnickel has become the most popular Christmas collectible today. Fashioned of chalkware from an antique chocolate mold, he stand a full 13 inches tall. This guy's face if just perfect, very detailed with a long, curly full beard. He carries a pine branch decorated with red berries in the crook of his arm and a bundle of swithches tucked under his other arm. Around his shoulder, draping down both his back and arms, is a green leaf shawl dotted with gold holly berries. His boots sport gold 'fur' trim. Painted an old red using several coats of fine artist acrylic, detailed, aged, then sealed many times to preserve this piece. Very, very fine mica finishes off the magic of this heirloom of tomorrow.
